Send a WhatsApp campaign

Approved templates, audiences, scheduling, and what to check before sending.

A campaign sends one approved WhatsApp template to many contacts at once: a promotion, a reopening notice, a reminder. Campaigns are included on Basic plans and above.

Before your first campaign

  1. Register your number for campaigns in the portal under WhatsApp Numbers (see Connect WhatsApp).
  2. Create a template under WhatsApp Templates: a name in lowercase with underscores, a category (Marketing or Utility), and the body. Use {{1}}, {{2}} for variables such as the customer's name.
  3. Press Submit to Meta. Approval usually takes minutes to a few hours; press Refresh Status to check. Only approved templates with plain text variables can be used in campaigns.

Send a campaign

  1. Open WhatsApp Campaigns → New.
  2. Choose the number to send from (or leave the default) and the template.
  3. Fill the template variables, one row per placeholder, in order.
  4. Pick the audience: a contact list, or an audience label from your inbox contacts. With both empty, the campaign goes to every contact that has a phone number.
  5. Set a schedule, or leave it empty to keep the campaign as a draft and press Send now when ready.

The campaign row shows progress and, when finished, counts of sent, failed, skipped and pending messages. Replies arrive in the inbox like any other conversation.

Opt-outs

Contacts who replied STOP are always skipped, and are counted under "Skipped (opt-out)". A contact who replies START is included again. See Grow an opt-in subscriber list.

Keep your number healthy

  • Send only to people who agreed to hear from you. Meta lowers the quality rating of numbers that get blocked or reported, and can pause messaging.
  • New numbers have a daily limit on new conversations. Start with small audiences and grow.
  • Marketing templates cost more than Utility templates; Meta bills per conversation to your WhatsApp Business Account.
